Movement: Beyond the Mat

Discover yoga classes designed for every aspect of balanced life.

Yoga is not merely exercise. It is movement toward awareness.

Today, Yoga is perhaps one of the most loosely interpreted words in the modern world.
For some, it is physical fitness. For others, performance or flexibility.

My understanding of Yoga is rooted in what I call CAT Yoga
Classical, Authentic, and Traditional.

Yet tradition without relevance becomes inaccessible.

Which is why my approach bridges ancient yogic wisdom with the realities of modern living—
making Yoga not just something practiced on the mat,
but something lived through the body, breath, mind, and daily action.

MY PHILOSOPHY

My teaching draws from three foundational streams of yogic wisdom:

Bhagavad Gita

For skillfulness in action, clarity in purpose, and understanding one’s Dharma.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

For reducing mental disturbance and quietening the fluctuations of the mind (Chitta Vritti).

Hatha Yoga Pradipika

For purifying and strengthening the body, creating a vessel capable of stillness and ease (Sukha).

Together, these teachings form the foundation of how I understand and share Yoga.

YOGA AS MOVEMENT

Yoga, to me, is movement—
not only of the limbs, but of attention, energy, breath, and consciousness.

It is a movement:
Away from unconscious patterns..
Away from unnecessary suffering (Dukha)..
Toward steadiness, awareness, and sustainable peace..

THE PRACTICE FRAMEWORK

Movement in practical application is explored through three interconnected dimensions:

ASANA

Movement of the Body

प्रयत्नशैथिल्यानन्त्यसमापत्तिभ्याम्॥२:४७॥

prayatna-śaithilya-ananta-samāpatti-bhyām ॥2:47॥

Asana is the beginning of the journey.

Through physical postures, we learn:

  • How the body moves in space
  • How tension is stored
  • How stability and awareness are developed

This is where discipline (Tapas) begins—
not through force, but through conscious effort and observation.

स्थिरसुखम् आसनम् ||२:४६||

Sthira Sukham Asanam ||2:46||

To master a yoga posture—making it completely steady and comfortable—you need to do two things simultaneously:

  1. Relax the Body: Stop fighting the pose. Let go of unnecessary muscular tension, struggling, or forcing, and allow your body to naturally settle.

  2. Expand the Mind: Shift your attention away from your physical body. Focus deeply on something vast and endless—like your breath, or on visualizing and meditating on the silent sound of om.

The Takeaway: Perfect posture isn’t achieved through physical force. It happens when your body is completely relaxed and your mind is deeply absorbed.

PRANAYAMA

Movement of the Breath

चले वाते चलं चित्तं निश्चले निश्चलं भवेत् ।
योगी स्थाणुत्वम् आप्नोति ततो वायुं निरोधयेत् ॥२:२॥
cale vāte calaṁ cittaṁ niścale niścalaṁ bhavet |
yogī sthāṇutvam āpnoti tato vāyuṁ nirodhayet ||2:2||

Pranayama is the willful and voluntary control of our breath to regulate the flow of vital energy (Prana) within our body.

Here, we begin to observe:

  • How breath moves within in spaces within human body
  • How emotional states influence breathing
  • How breathing influences emotional states

The breath becomes a bridge between body and mind—
allowing us to respond rather than react.

When the breath (prāna) moves, the mind is unsteady; when the breath is still, the mind becomes steady. The yogi attains absolute steadiness [like a statue or tree], therefore one should restrain the breath.”

This core philosophy from Sage Swatmarama indicates that mastering pranayama (breath control) is the key to conquering the fluctuations of the mind.

MIND — TOWARDS DHYANA

Movement of Attention

श्रद्धावीर्यस्मृतिसमाधिप्रज्ञापूर्वक इतरेषाम् ॥

śraddhāvīryasmṛtisamādhiprajñāpūrvaka itareṣām

Patanjali is describing a domino effect of spiritual progress. To reach the ultimate goal of yoga, you cannot skip steps.

First, you must have the inner conviction (Śraddhā) to begin. That faith gives you the unending energy and willpower (Vīrya) to practice. This energy allows you to maintain continuous mindfulness (Smṛti), which eventually leads to deep, uninterrupted concentration (Samādhi). Finally, out of that profound concentration blossoms true, liberating wisdom (Prajñā).

The deeper work begins internally.

This process moves gradually:

  • From reducing unnecessary mental engagement
  • To concentration
  • Toward Ekagrata — one-pointed focus and presence

Over time, this develops into a more refined state of awareness approaching Samyama
a state of integrated attention, meditation, and absorption.
